2. First Word

Hi All!

I don't know about you, but I'm going to make 2003 my best year yet. I'm not going to settle for less, and I don't think you should, either! I'd like to share a poem with you, if I may...

I bargained with life for a penny,

And life would pay no more.

However, I begged at evening when I counted my scanty store.

For life is a just employer, it gives you what you ask,

But once you have set the wages,

Why, you must bear the task.

I worked for a menial's hire, only to learn, dismayed,

That any wage I had asked of life,

Life would have willingly paid.

I wish you the imagination to dream big dreams, the faith to breathe life into them, and the enthusiasm to follow them through to success.

Thought For the Week:

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

- Mark Twain

Till next time,

John

3 Out Of 4 Websites A Waste Of Money

A major UK web company has looked at the statistics of 327 business websites they evaluated. While readers of WME will be convinced of the value of Web Marketing, this survey helps illustrate the gap between potential, and performance! Here are the errors they found...

87.2%  Web site is not being promoted correctly.

96.3%  Web site suffers from poor content.

75.8%  Failing web site costs money rather than makes money.
72.4%  Site fails to mention benefits of products/services to customer.

47.4%  Site aimed at  general audience but contains jargon words that

           only experts would understand.

These problems are particularly true of small to medium-sized local businesses- the very businesses that have the most to gain from using the new technology. It's a challenge, and we're here to help!

E-Tail Sales Forge Ahead In Holiday Season

ComScore reports that e-tail sales in the US reached a record US$12.6 billion for the period from November 1 to December 20, up 29% on the same period last year. That's an impressive performance considering the flat economy. Here's a list of the big winners- the categories that grew the most over the last 12 months.

Cluetrain Manifesto Theses #26 & #27

"Public Relations does not relate to the public. Companies are deeply afraid of their markets."

"By speaking in language that is distant, uninviting, arrogant, they build walls to keep markets at bay."

What's The Google Dance?

Over the last few days, a mysterious process has been taking place. Four days ago, if you did a Google search for 'web marketing', Web Marketing Ezine was ranked #23 (out of 4,680,000 results). Now, we're ranked #13. So what's happening, that produces this different result? It's called the Google Dance, and I'll let GoogleDance.com explain it...

"

During the month, Google sends out robots (spiders) to crawl the web and archive every website it finds. These archived websites will be presented in the next update of the Google index (database). The update process is initiated every 30 days or so, although on some occasions there have been more than 30 days between updates.

Now if you've been a keen Google fan you'll know that they have 3 main www servers online, which are as follows:
www.google.com - The main address, the true homepage of google.
www2.google.com - Thought to be a test server.
www3.google.com - Thought to be a test server.

Whilst nobody outside of Google truly seems to know the purpose of the www2 & www3 servers, many people have come to the assumption that they are test servers. During the update, which takes several days, the 3 Google servers display different results. Whilst the results vary from server to server, they are said to be "dancing", hence the name "Google Dance"."

Once the Google dance is underway, watch for the results on the second and third Google servers. Our new #13 position was shown on www3.google.com two full days before it became the "official" result on the main server.

For a bit of fun, here's a more entertaining explanation ( courtesy Woz at WebMasterWorld)...

(to the tune Hokey Pokey)
<start the music please>

They put some pages in,
They take some pages out,
They calculate the PageRank,
Then they shake it all about,

They wait until the full moon
Then they mix the servers up,

Thats what its all about.

<dum, dum, dum>

Ooooh, do the Google Dance,
Ooooh, do the Google Dance,
Ooooh, do the Google Dance,
Thats what its all about.

<end the music>

BTW, I'm delighted with the improvement in our ranking. Four months ago, we were outside the Top 100. Two months ago, we had made it to #43. Last month, we got up to #23. This month we are at #13. This result is a testament to the good advice we get from our SE mentors, particularly Dan Thies and Michael Wong.

Don't Go There! Websites That Suck

Vincent Flanders has a great idea. Learn about good website design by looking at bad website design. And there's a lot of it going around!

Vincent's WebPagesThatSuck.com is a site you should spend some time at. While it's still up, I suggest you have a look at his 'You Think It Sucks -- Year-End Edition' at http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/uthink99x.html  You'll see 46 examples of bad website design! One of my favorites is the Citizen Watch site. Imagine a watch that you'd like to buy as a gift, then try to buy it... no, try finding it, on this slick-looking, but oh-so-user-unfriendly site. It's at http://www.citizen.com.hk/ Good luck. You'll need it!

I can't stop at just one! You simply MUST look at Laser Surgery for Pets at http://www.laserles.com/  I hope his laser treatment is more professional than the webpage treatment!

E-Commerce Term of the Week: Spider

Synonymous with a crawler, this is a program that searches the Internet and attempts to locate new, publicly accessible resources, such as WWW documents, files available in public FTP archives, and Gopher documents.

Also called wanderers or bots, spiders contribute their discoveries to a database that Internet users can search by using a search engine. Spider technology is necessary because the rate at which people are creating new Internet documents greatly exceeds any manual indexing capacity (although search directories prefer the manual approach).

4. A Touch of Humor

Informed Choice

When a young marketer met his untimely end, he was informed that he had a choice about where he would spend his eternity: Heaven or Hell. He was allowed to visit both places, and then make his decision afterwards.

"I'll see Heaven first," said the salesman, and an angel led him through the gates on a private tour...
