2. First Word

Hi All!

One of the joys of publishing WME is visiting so many websites, with so much good information. This week I discovered a fascinating site, and I want to share it with you. You can learn a lot from our first item, 'The Marketing Hall of Fame'. Enjoy this, and the rest of a bumper issue.

Thought For the Week:

"The question isn't, "Do you make mistakes?" It's, "Do you learn from them?"

- Peter Drucker

Till next week, have a good one!

The Marketing Hall Of Fame

Online. Offline. The principles of Marketing are the same. So, since the world of Web Marketing can get a bit inbred at times, we'd like to expose you to some of the top offline Marketing efforts of recent years- the Inductee's to Counterintuitive Marketing's Hall of Fame.

"Counterintuitive Marketing Hall of Famers have achieved great marketing success adhering to marketing fundamentals such as clearly defining a profitable target and a compelling positioning, developing great advertising which clearly communicates benefits, and maintaining superior customer service." The Inductees are well worth studying, and the principles they have followed can be actioned in YOUR business.

Bigger May Not Be Better, But Too Small Is Bad

It's not that I'm getting older, or that the eyesight is getting worse. It's just that the font sizes are getting smaller. I wish!

What I DO wish, like millions of others, is that webmasters wouldn't follow the example of the lawyers, and use too much small type. It's a blessed nuisance. Well, here's a Lockergnome tip that will have you fixing the problem in Internet Explorer, in no time at all.

"All you need to do is open Internet Explorer and select Tools|Internet Options from the menu. Click a button called Accessibility. All that is left is for you to put a check in the box next to "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages." Viola! No more font size troubles. If you are a more advanced user then you can even go as far in this window as to set your own style sheet for every Web page. This is a great option for the visually impaired as you can set more vivid colors and larger text then the Web designer specified."

Well, that's fixed the problem on the computer. Now, how do I sort out the print media?

Take The Marketing IQ Test

Are you brave enough to take the Marketing IQ test? How will you rate? This test is "based on the results of a 50-question marketing IQ test given to a national sample of more than 1000 CEOs, Copernicus has found that the average marketing IQ of senior executives is just 79." Here's the scale...

150-160: A marketing genius
130-149: A guru, a maven
110-129: An up-and-coming consultant
  90-109: A seasoned professional
   70-89: A typical marketer
   50-69: A death-wish marketer
   30-49: An incompetent
   11-29: Dangerous to your company
     0-11: Guilty of malpractice

Now. Nobody's watching! Quickly, give it a try, at http://www.copernicusmarketing.com/iq/docs/marketing_iq_test.htm  We won't tell. Unless you get a great score, and want to let us know, that is. Your Editor was a bit disappointed to come in at 112. Obviously it's much harder to be rated a 'guru' here, than on the Internet in general!

Cluetrain Manifesto Thesis #18

"Companies that don't realize their markets are now networked person-to-person, getting smarter as a result and deeply joined in conversation are missing their best opportunity."

A Handy Option For Your Visitors

Here's a handy toolbar to drop onto your webpages, that will help your visitors AND increase your traffic. All you need to do is place one line of HTML into the appropriate place in your webpage code.

The first thing the toolbar does, is to display the <Title> of your page on the top line. On the main body of the toolbar, there are 3 options for your visitors.

1. Add your page their Favorites folder. This works for visitors with Internet Explorer 4, 5 and 6.

2. Lets your visitors share your site with a friend. This opens up their email client, and adds your page ,Title> as the Subject: of the email. This will function with Netscape 4 and with Explorer 4, 5 and 6.

3. Lets your visitors set your page as their Homepage. This works with Explorer 5 and 6 only, it won't be displayed to users of earlier versions.

The background color of the toolbar can be personalised with the color of your choice. To read more about this script, visit http://send-a-link.com

A Great Response

It was good to see the very positive response to my item on Affiliate Showcase last issue. Leading the charge was Jonah Klimack, who knows a good idea when he sees one. Jonah, who's best known as the developer of the excellent AdTrackz tracking program that we use and recommend at WME, has got off to a flying start, with three of his readers joining the program!

Amongst the WME signups, there are 17 who've joined the free option. Now it's incentive time! If any of you 17 decide to upgrade to a paid membership before September 24th., WME will give you a FREE Sponsor Ad to promote Affiliate Showcase to WME readers, carrying YOUR affiliate code. First in, best dressed.

So, how can YOU use Affiliate Showcase? Numerous WME readers have asked me to list what it does. Here's the short version.

1. It's a searchable database and directory, containing some of the best products and services on the Internet.

2. It's a list of Affiliate programs for products you can sell, and make a commission from, with no outlay!

3. It lists 2nd-tier Affiliate programs, where you make a commission on the sales of those who join under you.

4. It's a professional site that you can send people to. If they buy from or join your programs, they follow your personalized links.

5. You make a commission when anyone joins Affiliate Showcase under you.

Affiliate Showcase is still a few days away from full public release, so now is the time to get in- be the first to contact YOUR list, and get a headstart. To learn more, visit the WME customized site at, http://www.affiliateshowcase.com/?7442  , then visit the information page at http://www.affiliateshowcase.com/GetASite.asp?ID=7442

(Disclosure: I am an Affiliate Showcase affiliate ;-)

E-Commerce Term of the Week: Affiliate Marketing

A revenue sharing arrangement between online advertisers or e-commerce merchants and online publishers or Web site owners, whereby payment is based on performance measures, such as the number of sales, clicks, or registrations that the affiliate refers. In other words, two companies agree to link to one another; if someone clicks from site A to buy something at site B, site A gets a commission on the sale.

Affiliate software provides the tracking and reporting of commission-based activities (the sales, clicks, or registrations). Amazon.com pioneered affiliate marketing by getting as many other Web sites as possible to join its affiliate network and sell its products, thereby greatly extending its marketing reach

4. A Touch of Humor

Viagra Spill Revives Lake Michigan
Once-Cold and Torpid, Waterway Now Greatest of Great Lakes

Chicago (SatireWire.com) A freighter containing 62,000 metric tons of popular impotence drug Viagra struck a reef and sank in Lake Michigan today. As a result, the once-frigid lake no longer dangles into Illinois and Indiana, but now spans majestically across northern Wisconsin.

According to eyewitnesses, roughly 30 to 60 minutes after the ship's contents dissolved, the lake slowly but firmly began to push northwest toward Minnesota. Eventually, its swollen banks managed to poke aside Lake Superior, which cartographers said will lose its standing as the largest of the Great Lakes for the next four to six hours.

Area residents were surprised by the sudden shift, but conceded Michigan was "like an entirely new lake."

"For so many years that lake just, you know, sat there," said Martha Strop of Eau Claire, Wisc. "To be honest, I never even thought about it anymore. There wasn't much of a point. But now, well, this has changed our lives forever."

Government officials, however, were more cautious.

In Wisconsin, Gov. Scott McCallum declared a state of emergency, while in Minnesota, Gov. Jesse Ventura declared: "Is Lake Michigan a threat, or is it just glad to see me?"
