Google Search Engine Optimization

by Jim Boykin

1. What is Google Search Engine Optimization?
When a user types in a search phrase into Google, and gets back results, those results are made up of several complex formulas.  When Google "Ranks" sites, it is really just performing Mathematical Formulas.  There is no human involved in the process of evaluating any individual site - it is Math formulas computed from the information that Google Bot gathers from your site.

Google sends several Search Engine Spiders (computers) out to update pages it knows of, and to seek new pages that it finds through links. The name given to all the Google Search Engine Spiders is Google Bot.

Google Bot takes a "snapshot" of your web pages.   The best way to analyze what Google Bot sees is to combine two items.

  1. View the source code.  Go to any web page, put your mouse over a blank spot on the page, and right click your mouse.  This will bring up a menu.  Choose "view source".

  2. The second way that Google views your webs site can be found by using this tool.  That site also has instructions on how to get your main text to show up first, (as opposed to your navigation bar menu).

Google Bot can not view pictures.  Google Bot can not see if the site is "Pretty" or "not".  It also doesn't read Meta Tags the way that the older search engines once did.. Meta Tags are not bad, but they are mostly a thing of the past.

For an example of Google Search Engine Optimization, go to Google and type in any search phrase. Google will go through the list of sites that are in its database and look for those pages that mention your words at least once. On the Google results page all of these sites will be the X number in the "Results 1 - 10 of about X NUMBER".  You must mention the terms and phrases that you want to get found within your page's text.  In other words, if you are marketing a phrase, then that phrase had better be mentioned at least once on the page to have a chance of showing up in the results.

When Google ranks sites for the phrase "red round widgets", it will, for example, give each web page 1 point for mentioning all 3 of these words once.  Google would also, in this theory,  give 2 points to those who have this phrase mentioned twice.  Thus those with 2 points will score higher than those with 1 point.

But Google may like the phrase mentioned 8 times on the page, and you can score 8 points by mentioning it 8 times, but if you mention it more than 8 times Google may start subtracting 2 points for each additional occurrence.   So if a page mentioned this exact phrase 10 times it would score 4 points.  (This was just an example, it actually works more on percentage of words, and it changes each month).

Here is a good tool to analyze your Keyword Density.

Goog Google Search Engine Optimization looks at over 100 items, but here are some of the major items that Google analyses on web pages:

  • Words in Title Tag

  • Words in links

  • Words in Headings

  • Words in Bold

  • More weight is given to first 25 words of text on a page

  • Words in URL

  • Comment Tags in HTML

  • Having more than 250 words on a page helps.

  • Phrases used to describe pictures.

  • Other major items covered on separate pages here. . . DMOZ listing, PageRank, Back Links.

  • Google may also penalize for having too much repetition, or by "Spamming" them.
If it looks like you are trying to "trick" Google, then there is a chance you may penalized
by Google.  You must follow good practices.

Google runs a mathematical formula called an algorithm on your page .  The better the algorithm, the more  "optimized" it is said to be.   A page optimized for a specific phrase can bring it much weight towards the final ranking that this page will have for the targeted phrase.

The Google Search Engine puts A LOT of weight on the text that is found in the TITLE tag. Most search results will show pages that have the searched words in the title tag.

The HTML Code should start like this:

A common mistake of many web sites is that they have the same title tag on every page of their web site.  Each page should have different title tags, depending on the keywords that you are marketing on that specific page.

Also good Google Search Engine Optimization will have the targeted keyword phrases at the beginning of the page since the text at the beginning of the page has more relevance than the text on the rest of the page.  This means that your first few sentences on the page should mention your targeted keyword phrases.

Good Google Search Engine Optimization also tends to have a "fair" amount of words on each page.  Google tends to like having between 250 and 450 words on the page. This means "lots of good content".  The Google Search Engine loves content - Optimization also means having good content that is keyword rich.  How many keyword you ask?  Well, a really rough number is: if you're text is around 350 words, use your phrase about 2 to 20 times ;)

Google also likes keywords to be in the Headings Tag. Heading Tags range in size from 1-6.  The HTML for a heading tag is <h2>Google Search Engine Optimization Firmt</h2>, An H2 is below:

You'll want to have some heading tags on the page, with your keywords located in them.

Google also likes it if you have text links on the page that include your keyword phrases.  If you have a navigation bar that is pictures (and not text) then you will want to also add some text links on the pages that have your keywords on them.  For example, if I were marketing the phrase "Google submission" I might put this phrase in a text link like this: Google submission.

A very small factor, that can help is the use of "ALT" tags.  These are the tags that a designer will put around a picture.  You can view these tags by hovering your mouse over a picture, and then keeping your mouse still, and you will see the text for the ALT tag.  For example:

Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page the co-founders of Google at the first ever Google Dance. They created Google Search Engine Optimization by starting Google.

The ALT tags here read "Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page the co-founders of Google at the first ever Google Dance. They created Google Search Engine Optimization by starting Google."

Another item that you will want to check is the HTML.  Errors in your code can create problems with Search Engine Spiders.  It's easy check, just type in each page in the space below to see if there are any code errors!

One could also run Web Position Gold Page Critic reports also. Web Position Gold is software that does many things, including analyzing web pages for Google Search Engine Optimization, and other search engine optimization.  Due to variables that Google has, like PageRank, Back Links, DMOZ Listings though, Web Position Gold's Page Critic must be either taken with a big grain of salt, or needs to be studied intensely by an expert to find your "optimal" text optimization.

Creating doorway pages is worthless....creating pages chock full of good information that is keyword rich is the "key".

Even the best optimized text pages need the other factors listed below in order to score high for relevant phrases.  Once things like PageRank increase, your "text optimization" is less important.  You should still include the keyword phrases that are relevant to your page, and still have good relevant text.

Google Submission

Google Directory
Google Back Links
Google PageRank
Google Dance
